Day3. Mtskheta: Georgia’s Holiest City and Ancient Capital - Ananuri.

Trip to Mtskheta: Georgia’s Holiest City and Ancient Capital.

The historic churches of Mtskheta, former capital of Georgia, are outstanding examples of medieval religious architecture in the Caucasus. Mtskheta was the ancient capital of Kartli, the East Georgian Kingdom from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, and was also the location where Christianity was proclaimed as the official religion of Georgia in 337.

14:00-18:00. Continuing program. Ananuri (Georgian: ანანური ) is a castle complex on the Aragvi River in Georgia, about 45 miles (72 kilometres) from Tbilisi. Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) In the north of Georgia, at the foot of the Mount Kazbek, there is a small settlement called Stepantsminda. For about 100 years till 2007 it was always known as Kazbegi, and only recently it received its historic name.

Day4. Gergeti Trinity Church. Mount Kazbeg. Alpin meadows. Barbecue.

09:00. Walk through alpine meadows. Vicinity of Stepantsminda is picturesque. There is a river Thergi running below the town, with snowed peaks of Caucasus rising among which the Mount Kazbek standing out, with its 5033m height. There are quite a few valley glaciers and forests, both deciduous and coniferous. Fresh mountain air and mineral springs of Stepantsminda are considered to be the main therapy for breathing or eating disorders.

12:40-13:40. Lunch.

Visit a Russian church of St. Nicolas, ethnographic museum and the Gergeti Trinity Church.

Walk through the Kazbegi. For those who want - 4-5 version tracking. Any difficulty.

Day5. Kakheti. Sighnaghi- Bodbe- Telavi.

08:00-09:00. Breakfast.

09:00. Visited to the legendary region - Kakheti.

First destination-Sighnaghi. It is a small town in the east of Georgia situated on the mountainside in the historical region of Kakheti. It was founded in the 17th century during the reign of King Heraclius II of Georgia, and as locals say, it is the only city in Georgia that has fully preserved the fortress walls that are crowned with watchtowers, where one can climb to get the magnificent view of the Alazan valley.

13:30-14:30. Lunch.

Visit to Bodbe. St. George monastic and Episcopal complex, situated in Bodbe (Kakheti) is the national Georgian relic. In St. George cathedral are kept the remains of Nino of Kappadokia, Equal-to-the-Apostles, the great Baptist of Georgia, the harbinger of Christianity.

Next drive to Tsinandali, where you’ll visit the house-museum of Kakheti nobleman Alexandre Chavchavadze. You’ll have excursion at the residence, English-French garden and wine cellar located in the museum with a glass of famous Tsinandali wine. Continue to Shumi winery located just few minutes from Tsinandali museum. Visit the wine museum “Vazioni” located in the winery and taste the local wines with light snacks.

Drive to Telavi – the administrative center of Kakheti and former capital of Kakhetian Kingdom.

Day6. Gori-Uplistsikhe. Joseph Stalin’s Museum.

08:00-08:40. Breakfast.

Star travel to Gori. City was founded by David the Builder, the greatest king of Georgia (1089-1125). Here we will make a visit to Museum of Joseph Stalin. Joseph Stalin’s Museum in Gori establishe in 1951 as a local history museum, but clearly intended to become a memorial to Stalin, who died in 1953. The main building of the complex is a large palace in Stalinist Gothic style. The exhibition is divided into six halls in roughly chronological order, and contain many items actually or allegedly owned by Stalin, including some of his office furniture, his personal effects and gifts made to him over the years. There is also much illustration by way of documentation, photographs, paintings and newspaper articles. The display concludes with one of twelve copies of the death mask of Stalin taken shortly after his death. To one side of the museum is Stalin's personal railway carriage. The green Pullman carriage, which is armour plated and was used by Stalin from 1941 onwards, including his attendances at the Yalta Conference and the Teheran Conference.

Then we go to Shida Kartli region and visit Uplistsikhe (“Lord’s fortress”), an ancient town built in a rock. The stone complex contains various constructions dating from II ML BC to the Middle Ages Literally meaning ‘fortress of the lord’, Uplistsikhe (Georgian: უფლისციხე) dates back as far as the Iron Age and is one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia. Situated 10 km east from  the town Gori on a rocky promontory above the river Mtkvari, the city stood directly on the path of the old Silk Road and was a strategic and commercial center. At the peak of its prosperity the city had a population of 20 000.

Visit to Borjomi town.

Day7. Borjomi-Akhaltsikhe – Rabat - Vardzia.

08:00-09:00. Breakfast.

09:00. Trip to spa-resort. taste natural mineral water and walk in Borjomi Park.

Drive to Akhaltsikhe (“New fortress”), the city in southwestern part of Georgia, Samtskhe-Javakheti region. Visit the Rabat. the castle was built in XII century. The complex consists: synagogue, Armenian temple and catholic temple.

14:20-15:00. Lunch.

After lunch, drive to Vardzia, hewn in the stone town. (XII-XIII c.c). Vardzia rock-cut monastery is one of the well-known monuments of Georgian architecture. The city is located some 30 km away from the regional center of Aspindza, on the left bank of the Kura River. Hundreds of rooms cut in almost vertical rock –sells, halls, auxiliary spaces (for instance a stable),aqueduct arranged on the slope, create the impression as if Vardzia were even a city. The complex was created in the second half of XII c. Commenced by King George III it was completed by his daughter  — Queen Tamar.

Afterwards, drive to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day8. Armenia. Sanahin and Haghpat Monasteries. Lake Sevan.

08:00-08:30. Breakfast.

Border crossing. Beginning of the program in Armenia.

Visit Sanahin and Haghpat Monasteries, both are listed in UNESCO World Heritage List.

Immerse yourself into the idyllic beauty. We visit the Lake Sevan. It is the largest lake in Armenia and the Caucasus region. It is one of the largest fresh-water high altitude lakes. Sevan is one of the main tourist attractions of Armenia. On the shore of the lake situated - Dilijan, usually called Armenian Switzerland or Little Switzerland by the locals.

 

Day 9: GARNI- GEGHARD.

After breakfast trip along the picturesque canyon of the Рiver Azat. Visit to the cave monastery of the 13th century Geghard, which is located at the bottom of the canyon. Gegard is included into the UNESCO World Heritage List. The monastery of Geghard contains a number of churches and tombs, most of them cut into the rock, which illustrate the very peak of Armenian medieval architecture. The complex of medieval buildings is set into a landscape of great natural beauty, surrounded by towering cliffs at the entrance to the Azat Valley. The tour continues to the village of Garni known for its Garni temple – the only surviving example of the Hellenistic style. Garni temple is the only pagan temple in a territory of Armenia built in 1st C AD by the Armenian King Trdat the First. It is dedicated to God of Sun Mithras. The Garni temple lies about 32KM East of Yerevan and the complex hosts a number of buildings including a royal palace, Roman bath and a church.

Return in Yerevan.

Day10. Echmiadzin - the Armenian Vatican. Yerevan City Tour.

Visit to the Holy See of Echmiadzin – the religious center of all Armenians around the world. The main sight in this town is the Cathedral – the oldest Christian church in Armenia, one of the first in the whole Christian world. Echmiadzin translates literally “the place” where the Only Begotten Son of God descended. According to tradition, St. Gregory the illuminator saw a vision of the Only Begotten descended from heaven and with a golden hammer stroke the ground where the Cathedral was to be located.

Next point- the St. Hripsime church. It is a seventh century Armenian Apostolic church in the city of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin), and one of the oldest surviving churches in the country. Five kilometers towards Yerevan from Echmiadzin and we can see the ruins of Zvartnots. The temple of Zvartnots one of the importants monuments of ancient architecture.

Return in Yerevan. City tour. Highlights:

  • -Matenadaran museum.
  • -Genocide Memorial and Museum.

 

Day 11: Visit to Khor Virap monastery (4-17c).

Enjoy panoramic view to mount Ararat. The name Khor Virap means a Deep Dungeon. After we head to Noravank Monastery. Noravank was founded in 1205 by Bishop Hovhannes, a former abbot of Vahanavank near the present-day city of Kapan in Syunik.

The monastic complex includes the church of S. Karapet, S. Grigor chapel with a vaulted hall, and the church of S. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God). Ruins of various civil buildings and khachkars are found both inside and outside of the compound walls. Noravank was the residence of the Orbelian princes. The architect Siranes and the miniature painter and sculptor Momik worked here in the latter part of the thirteenth and early fourteenth century.

Return in Yerevan. Dinner: 18:30-20:00.

Day12.

Breakfast. Departure time at the Yerevan airport or Tbilisi is selected individually at time when it was most convenient for you. Travelers who return to Georgia  get additional tourist program on the way.
